If Vermont sues companies to get money, companies may raise their prices to cover it, which might lead to Vermonters freezing, or shifting to available, probably cheaper, but particulate-concerning wood. It seems like perhaps legal folks should consider second and third order effects of their ideas on ordinary people in the State. Or maybe have an open discussion of trade-offs with citizens before engaging in likely expensive litigation?
So Vermont shuts down Yankee Nuclear, thereby increasing CO2 emissions but subsequently brings an action against companies producing and selling fossil fuel products that the state of Vermont and its consumers continue to purchase and use. File this in the shocking but not surprising folder.
The companies may have contracts with gas stations and other suppliers that they must honor so cutting off the state might be difficult. On the other hand, if they could, it would do more to pry the legislature out of the hands of crazed lefties than any election ad.
Our legislature are idiots. Woke idiots. They are more worried about 'equity' than tackling the problems of the state. More than a few of their proposals are beyond stupid and destined to fail.
On the good side, the natives - those whose families have been here for generations - are resilient, practical, and roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-to-work kind of people. These neighbors make living here wonderful.
The flatlanders from NYC, NJ, CT, MA, are the ones who vote for the left-wing midwits like Bernie Sanders and Becca Balint that represent the state. Here in the hinterland, among the aforementioned natives, Trump and his policies have a lot of support.
As the latest Grand Solar minimum has already started, the slow rise in the overall temperature of the oceans has stopped and two of the largest are being measured as having "a (mysterious) drop in temperature" the counter-claims in law against the Vermont State could well bankrupt it.
Fossil fuels are the basis of first world standard of living excellence and the promise to the Third world to catch up. A slow, sober and deliberate multiplication of a variety of safe and reliable nuclear fission power generating system will allow the remaining fossil fuel reserves to power the third world and the first world to produce power generation by solar panels to aid counties to small or unstable to house their own nuclear power plants.
This is little more than scapegoating! Bernie's statements are about as hypocritical as I've ever read from any politician, especially given his outspoken opposition to nuclear power.
We need less sloganeering and more rational thought. Most would agree that carbon dioxide is not the problem, but rather the inexorable geologic processes that have governed earth's climate for four billion years. Politically, we need to ensure people are protected against climate, whatever it might be.
The "bill" for the damage that net emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere causes should be sent to the users of the fuels and other activities that emit CO2 with a national (in every nation) tax on sale of fuels in proportion to the CO2 emission their combustion causes.
I am a big fan of the principle of holding for-profit companies accountable for the impact of their business, and their business model on the community at large, and on the living environment - from which all prosperity comes. This law is a big step in the direction of that principle. It re-internalizes externalized costs. Commonly known as capitalism. Externalized costs are what is known as socialism: get the public to pay for it. With tax money. Privatize the profit, and socialize the risk. Lets get this aspect of socialism out of our capitalist system. Now, and forever more (we have to take care of the generations following us, too.)
So we sue utensil manufacturers for obesity in America? VT individually suing a company while it's citizens willingly use it's products seems counter intuitive...
Interesting.. couldn't quite make this out but it looks like in 2020 Vermont was getting 80 ish percent of its heating from fossil fuels.https://www.eia.gov/consumption/residential/data/2020/state/pdf/State%20Space%20Heating%20Fuels.pdf

The EIA notes VT is particularly sensitive to FF price shocks because of its reliance through home heating. Go figure.

The fossil fuel companies should stop selling their products in Vermont. It would then be interesting to see how Vermont's citizens reacted.
We're not all left-wing morons here, ya know. ;)

Amazing. Suing for supposed future damages? This is pure fantasy. Fossil fuel companies should put a 500% surcharge on all materials sold in Vermont.

Simple solution: make them drive to NH to put gas in their cars.
Don’t they mostly use fuel oil for heat in the winter in VT? Stop selling that in the state too and this BS will be over by Christmas.
A lot of Vermonters already go to NH for a lot of things, much to the ire of our legislature since NH has no sales tax.
I was on this weeks ago!

That hasn't worked too well in Canada.
