Only LOW COST nuclear power will impact our future.

Article has good insights into the practicality of dual AP1000 nuclear power plants at existing plant sites but not much optimism on cost. I'm a co-founder of Thorcon, developing molten salt reactor power plants for Indonesia and SE Asia markets. The rich tech firms don't have the same incentive we do -- energy cheaper than from coal. This essay explains the importance of LOW COST CO2-emission-free, 24x7 power and describes our design choices to generate electricity cheaper than from burning coal or LNG. https://mailchi.mp/86906e15dcd6/only-low-cost-nuclear-power-will-impact-our-future?e=0bd4c20197 Visit thorconpower.com for more.

Great article. Good comments. A couple systematic errors I note.

Economies of scale are critical... but it's 2025 and that doesn't mean craftsmen building a giant cathedral. It means manufacturing. Timex to Rolex is orders of magnitude economy of scale. The industry wants to sell us a grandfather clock, and we haven't even started to think of the Casio digital watch...

Standardizing on a Design-- is the dumbest thing we could do, but attractive to DC and Wall St because it confers Monopoly Power on one company. Capitalism would be a good idea but that means you need several companies, and a path for new market entrants. DC Loaths competition and our regulators have done a great job with "Innovation Free Zones' that protect industry from new products or competition. The Status Quo is the problem. Let the politicians choose and they will stick with oil-- it's worked great for them since 1922. The O&G industry is always super supportive of alternative energy schemes as long as they are impossible. Large scale Fusion, Hydrogen economy, Battery storage... O&G loves wind and solar for a more authentic reason-- they serve as the person spinning the roulette wheel that keeps the CAISO CASINO exiting. Frackers get to solve the manufactured emergency every afternoon at 4:20 when solar takes the day off. Selling wee bits of gas at Fabulous prices!
